Required CE effective January 1, 2021: Licensed dentists whose practices include direct patient care must complete at least 2 CE hours annually in safe and effective pain management when prescribing opioids and other controlled substances to patients.
The Opioid Epidemic now claims well over 100,000 lives per year in the United States and there is no indication that the upward trajectory of overdose deaths will abate in the foreseeable future. Health care professionals, including dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants, should understand the evolving pattern of illicit drug use in the U.S., as well as the types of drugs being diverted and abused, to provide safe dental treatment to patients who may be affected by addiction. This program updates dental professionals on the current status of the Opioid Epidemic, the evidence-based selection of drugs, and new categories of analgesics used to control acute postoperative dental pain.
